What are Marijuana Seeds?

Cannabis seeds contain the embryonic form of the plant and have the genetic material needed for growth. Weed seeds come when a male cannabis plant’s pollen fertilizes a female plant. They contain the genetic material that passes on the set of traits from their parent plants.

Marijuana seeds can come in various forms, but typically you want darker healthy looking seeds. A general rule is that you want harder seeds as opposed to softer and paler seeds. However, some strains have lighter coloured seeds, so this is just a general rule of thumb.

Different Types of Marijuana Seeds

There are currently three main types of cannabis seeds: Regular seeds, feminized seeds, and autoflower seeds. When you buy cannabis seeds online in Canada, you want to understand the differences.

Regular Seeds

Regular seeds are ordinary cannabis seeds. The thing about these types is that you cannot determine the sex of the plant. There is pretty much a 50/50 chance your plant will be male or female. This uncertainty poses a problem for growers because they typically need to wait until they flower to know females.

Feminized Seeds

Feminized cannabis seeds provide growers with a 97% certainty that they are females. Breeders have worked hard to create quality feminized seeds that help take the worrying out of sexing cannabis plants in your garden. Most cannabis farmers prefer to use feminized weed seeds to prevent any males from pollinating any females. These seeds typically come at a premium, but the extra cost is worth it.

Autoflower Seeds

Autoflower seeds grow based on a set timeframe. An autoflower with a 180 growth period will likely be done around 180 days regardless of the light it is getting. This set grow time makes these plants both good and bad. The good being that there is less maintenance required and usually a quicker harvest. The bad is that there is very little room for error.

How to Grow Cannabis

Growing cannabis is an art. Some are natural-born artists, and others can only do so much no matter how hard they try. The same goes for growing weed. It is not hard to grow marijuana, but it is hard to grow top-shelf marijuana. The best thing to do before growing is doing tonnes of research on the topic. You want to learn what supplies you need, what your plants need, how they grow, and what you need to do yourself. Let’s go over the basics that can get you started.

What you Need to Get Started

Seeds With Good Genetics

You want to buy quality cannabis seeds with good genetics because your finished plant will only be as good as it can be. If you start with stronger genetics, you give yourself more leeway in your grow. You need premium seeds that are healthy for a chance at fire buds.

Equipment and Supplies

The supplies you can get are endless, but here are the most important things you will need:

  • Grow lights (this is for indoor grows)
  • Grow tent or suitable location
  • Cannabis seeds
  • Pots (will depend on how large you want your plants to grow)
  • Growing medium (soil, coco coir, hydroponics, etc.)
  • Fertilizer
  • Ph Pen (will help you maintain an optimum range of ph in the medium)
  • Plant trimmers & clippers
  • Stakes (to provide support to the plant)
  • Fan (to provide adequate airflow)
  • Air filter (to minimize the smell and contaminants in the air)

Stages of Growing Cannabis

There are three main phases in the growth cycle of cannabis: The germination, vegetation, and flowering stages. There are also two stages after cutting your plants, the drying and curing stages.

Germination Stage

The germination phase is when the seed starts to sprout. There are many methods to start a cannabis seed, but the paper towel method is the most popular. To do this, you can place your seeds into a room temperature glass of water and let them soak for 8-12 hours. The idea here is to let some water start to absorb into the seed to kick start sprouting. You don’t want to leave your seeds soaking for too long, or they can drown.

After 8-12 hours, take the seeds and place them in between folded paper towels. You want to wet the paper towel to be damp but not soaking wet. You want the water to continue to keep soaking into the seeds. After about 24 hours, you should notice the seeds sprouted, and a taproot is showing. Some seeds may need much longer than 24 hours. The seeds with a taproot over ¾ of an inch should be ready for you to plant. Make sure not to plant it too deep that it cannot break the surface. A good depth is a few millimetres below the surface so that it is easy to find the light but with enough medium to help remove the shell.

Vegetative Stage

The vegetation stage can go for as long as the light allows. Cannabis plants will continue to vegetate until it receives about 12 hours of darkness each day. For weed farmers growing indoors, you typically would veg them for about 1-2 months, depending on the environment and genetics.

In this stage, the plants put on most of their leaves and grow new branches. You want to do most of your plant training and defoliating in this stage. The plant is taking up nutrients to make itself as healthy and ready as possible for flowering.

Flowering Stage

The flowering stage starts when the plants receive about 12 hours of light per day. Indoor growers usually turn their timers to provide 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark for the rest of the grow. The plants will first undergo a three-week “stretch,” where they have a significant growth spurt. Some weed strains can even double in height during these three weeks.

After the plant stops growing, all the attention will turn towards creating buds, crystals, terpenes, and other compounds. Just be sure to watch out for mould during this stage. You want to keep your garden well ventilated and check your buds for mould regularly.

Drying Stage

Once you cut your plants, you want to hang them to dry in a cool, well-ventilated, and dry place. The time it takes to dry your buds will depend on the environment of the location, size and density of your buds, and air circulation. On average, it should take anywhere between 5-14 days to dry your buds.

Curing Stage

Once the buds are dry enough, you should place them in air-tight jars. You then want to frequently open the jars to replace the air and to get the humidity in the jar down (also known as “burping.” As time passes, you can decrease the frequency of burping your jars. Just make sure not to let the buds get wet. If you find your buds too moist, you can take them out and let them dry a bit before putting them back into the jar.
